The Crimson Tide battled the Gators to a scoreless 2OT draw
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama and Florida played an exciting 110 minutes, but neither team scored as the game ended in a 0-0 draw Sunday evening at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The last time Alabama (7-7-2, 1-5-1 SEC) has not allowed Florida (4-8-3, 2-3-2 SEC) to score a goal dates back to 2012.
"Not the result we wanted, but I'm extremely proud of the group's effort," head coach Wes Hart states. "We fought hard and defended well when we needed to. Just a little bit of a tweak offensively and I think we walk away with a win. Credit to the team, I think we fought as hard as we could. I was happy that all five seniors got into the game and contributed. They helped lay the foundation for us going forward."
Despite not clicking on all cylinders in the first half, the Crimson Tide proved to be the more dominant team, but did not have a goal to show for it. Alabama was credited with eight shots and continually put pressure on the Gator backline, only to have Florida get the ball out of harm's way. Florida, meanwhile, took only three shots of their own in the first 45 minutes, none of which were threatening.
All eight of Alabama's corner kicks were registered in the first half, and freshman Riley Mattingly came close to scoring off a corner kick taken in the 27th minute of action.
The second half featured both teams looking to find a rhythm and sophomore goalkeeper Alex Plavin was the first to make something happen when she saved the ball from falling between the posts in the 51st minute.
Both teams played a scoreless two halves to push the game into overtime and neither team could find the golden goal, moving the contest into double overtime.
At the end of 110 minutes of action Florida outshot Alabama by two, 15-13, but the Tide had more shots on goal (5-4). The Tide also tallied more corner kicks, 8-2.
Alabama plays Texas A&M for its final home game of the regular season, Thursday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. CT. Admission is free to all home games.
