
Alabama Swimming Duo Wrap Up Competition at the 2017 World University Games in Taiwan

Sophomore Zane Waddell and junior Laurent Bams both competed in the sprint events in Taipei
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The Alabama swimming and diving team had two swimmers – sophomore Zane Waddell and junior Laurent Bams – competing at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan at the Taiwan Sports University Arena this past week.
Waddell led his squad to the championship final of the 400-meter freestyle relay, where South Africa took eighth place with a 3:20.67. Waddell led off the quartet with a 49.21. Waddell took 15th in the 50-meter butterfly, touching the wall with a 24.16 in prelims and a 24.48 in the semifinals. He also posted a top-20 finish in the 100-meter freestyle, going 50.23, good for 19th place. Waddell was 35th in the 50-meter freestyle after stopping the clock with a 23.25.
In his first season with the Crimson Tide, Waddell earned All-America honors in the 50 and 100 freestyles and was second at the NCAA Championships as part of Alabama's 200 medley relay. He also earned All-SEC and All-America honors as part of three relays.
Bams, swimming for the Netherlands, competed in the 50 and 100-meter butterfly as well as the 50 and 100-meter freestyle. Bams finished 29th in the 100m freestyle with a time of 50.51 and was 40th in the 50m freestyle with a 23.38. He took 36th in the 50m butterfly and 37th in the 100m butterfly, posting times of 24.81 and 54.54, respectively.
As a rookie at Alabama, Bams was the SEC Male Freshman of the Year. He earned All-America honors in the 100 freestyle as a sophomore and as part of Crimson Tide relays as a freshman and sophomore.
Waddell and Bams, along with the rest of their Crimson Tide teammates, return to collegiate action on Sept. 15 at Delta State.
