The Tide outshot the Bulls 20-7 in the loss
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's soccer fell to South Florida in overtime on Thursday night, 2-1, at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The match headed to overtime knotted at 1-1, before the Bulls ended the game with a goal four minutes into the extra period. The Bulls (3-0) earned their third win of the season and the Tide (2-1) picks up their first loss of 2017.
"We showed that we were able to execute our game plan, especially defensively," coach West Hart said. "We were organized and did not give them a lot of chances. They have a very dangerous forward that I thought we held in check for most of the night. I am proud of the way we fought. The effort and the energy was all there. The quality to create chances were there, but we just lacked that quality in the final period to win the match."
After a couple of minutes of back and forth possession, Alabama took the first shot in the seventh minute that resulted in a goal. Celia Jimenez Delgado induced a corner, and Emma Welch placed the ball perfectly in the box to set up Casey Wertz who headed it home for her first career goal to put the Tide up by one.
Alabama continued to keep the pressure on USF, controlling the ball on the Bulls' side of the field for most of the half. The Tide defense limited the Bulls to one shot before they scored off a penalty kick with 22 seconds left in the half to tie the game at one apiece.
The Tide opened the second half with a corner kick and a great look on a free kick, but could not connect to break the tie. With 26 minutes left on the clock, UA launched two consecutive shots, but nothing crossed the goal line. Alabama would then attack five more times to South Florida's four, but to no avail, as the game was sent into overtime with the score at 1-1.
Wertz kicked off overtime striking one toward the net, but the USF keeper made a diving save to keep the game alive. After the Tide failed to convert on the resulting corner kick, the Bulls made a run down the field and entered the box. After passing the ball back and forth in the box, USF midfielder Grace Adams put the ball past the Tide keeper to end the game in the 94th minute.
Alabama outshot the South Florida, 20-7, and earned three corners to the Bulls one and Kat Stratton made one save in 94 minutes.
Alabama returns to the pitch on Sunday at noon CT to take on the No. 6/4 Florida State Seminoles at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
