Defending conference champion Crimson Tide tied for 10th after first round

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The No. 1-ranked Alabama women's golf team got off to a slow start in Friday's opening round of the 2017 Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the par-72 6,202-yard Legacy Course at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. Alabama finished the day at 7-over par (295) and is tied for 10^th place heading into Saturday's second round.

Texas A&M leads the field after a 6-under par 282 on Friday. Arkansas is one shot back at 5-under par (283). Florida is third at 4-under par (284). South Carolina is fourth at 2-under par (286). Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are tied for fifth at 1-under par (287).

"You have these days in golf," head coach Mic Potter said following Friday's first round. "That's why the best player doesn't always win. We had a bad day at the wrong time but we're going to play 36 more holes the best we can and see what happens."

Freshman Kristen Gillman led the Tide on Friday with an even-par 72 that included three birdies and a near eagle on 18 when her approach shot struck the pin. Gillman is tied for 19^th in the individual race. Sophomore Lauren Stephenson and junior Lakareber Abe both finished at 2-over par 74 to tie for 36^th while sophomore Cheyenne Knight and senior Mia Landegren both finished at 3-over par 75 and are tied for 44^th.

Alabama will be paired with LSU in Saturday's second round and will tee off beginning at 12:16 p.m. (CT).
