Alabama Women’s Tennis Edged by Missouri on Sunday Afternoon to Conclude 2017 Regular Season

The Crimson Tide set to take on Tennessee in the first round of the 2017 SEC Tournament on Wednesday, April 19, at 10 a.m. CT
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 33rd-ranked Alabama women's tennis team lost a 4-3 decision to the Missouri Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium to officially conclude the 2017 regular season. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to an 8-15 overall record including a 2-11 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers improve to 11-13 and 2-11 in league play.
Missouri collected the first doubles victory of the contest, as Clare Raley and Tate Schroeder topped senior Danielle Spielmann and junior Smith Hinton in a 6-3 decision on court three. The Tigers went on to clinch the doubles point in the next match that finished to take a 1-0 match lead headed into singles, as Mackenzy MIddlebrook and Cassidy Spearman defeated senior Joanna Savva and sophomore Andie Daniell, 6-3, on court two.
The Tide responded immediately to start singles action, as Spielmann (No. 3) won in straight sets over Spearman, 6-2, 6-3, to tie the match score at 1-1. Bea Machado Santos registered a 6-0, 7-6(1) upset over Alabama's No. 15 ranked singles player in senior Erin Routliffe (No. 1) to give the Tigers back the match lead at 2-1. Alabama bounced back to equalize the match score at 2-2, as Daniell (No. 2) outlasted Schroeder in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 thriller. The Tide found life in the last spot of its singles lineup, as freshman Juliana Valero (No. 6) overcame Raley, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, to give Alabama a 3-2 match advantage. The Tigers came storming back to register back-to-back wins in three sets on courts four and five to clinch the 4-3 match victory. Amina Ismail overcame freshman Maddie Pothoff (No. 5), 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, before Middlebrook defeated Hinton (No. 4), 6-3-, 2-6, 6-4, resulting in the final match score.
The Tide will be back in action on Wednesday, April 19, when it is set to take on the Tennessee Volunteers at 10 a.m. CT in the first round of the 2017 SEC Tournament on the campus on Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
