Crimson Tide shoots 8-under par on Monday to improve eights spot into second place overall
GREENSBORO, Ga. – The Alabama men's golf team carded a season-best total of 8-under par 280 during Monday's second round to vault up the leaderboard into a tie for second place overall after two rounds of the Linger Longer Invitational. The Crimson Tide will enter the final round of play with a 36-hole score of 9-under par 567 (287-280) on the par 72, 7,073-yard Reynolds Lake Oconee Course at the Great Waters Golf Club.
The Tide's second round total is the lowest since shooting a 279 during the second round of the 2016 NCAA Championships. Moreover, the team's 36-hole total is the best since carding a 563 (276-287) during the opening two rounds of the 2016 Puerto Rico Classic.
Alabama continues to be led by sophomore Davis Riley, who is playing in his first event this spring after being sidelined with an injury. Riley collected his second consecutive sub-par round with a 2-under 70 on Monday, which gives him five rounds (out of 11 this season) of shooting par or better. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native will come into Tuesday's third and final round with a 36-hole total of 6-under 138 (68-70), six strokes back of individual leader Greyson Sigg of Georgia (132).
Junior Lee Hodges continued his solid play, carding a team-best score of 4-under par 68 on Monday and is in a tie for 10th overall with a 5-under 139 (71-68) for the event. Hodges has scored in the 60s in four of his last five rounds and has shot under par in six consecutive rounds and nine of his last 10 overall.
Junior Jonathan Hardee gave the Crimson Tide three players who scored below par on Monday, as he carded a season-low 18-hole score of 3-under 69. The Greer, S.C., native will enter the third round in a tie for 21st with a two-day total of 1-under par 143 (74-69).
Junior Tyler Hitchner is in a tie for 41st at 3-over 147 (74-73), while senior Dru Love is in 64th at 152 (78-74).
Alabama, which moved up eight spots from Sunday's 10th-place result, carded a below-par team total for the fourth time in its last five rounds. The Tide trails No. 4 Baylor, who is the clubhouse leader with a two-day total of 26-under 550. Eighth-ranked Virginia (567) is in third, while Troy (568) and UNC Greensboro (569) round out the top five, respectively.
Alabama is scheduled to begin the third and final round of play on Tuesday morning at 9:10 a.m. CT (10:10 a.m. ET) of Hole No. 1, and will be paired alongside Baylor and Virginia.
