Senior Maddy Anzelc was one of 14 student-athletes tabbed to the community team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior midfielder Maddy Anzelc was named to the 2017 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, as announced by the league's office Thursday. Anzelc joins 13 other student-athletes who were tabbed onto the prestigious list that highlights an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior effort.
During her time at the Capstone, Anzelc has spent countless hours volunteering and helping those in need in the local community. Every year, Anzelc has participated in soccer clinics around Tuscaloosa, spearheaded efforts for Project Angel Tree, which collects presents for children whose parents are incarcerated during the holiday season, and has set up soccer stations and handed out candy at the annual Halloween Extravaganza.
Anzelc is currently the team advocate for Team Impact and is the first student-athlete at Alabama to begin this program that pairs chronically ill children with college sports teams. During the offseason in the spring, she also schedules visits to see those who have put their lives on the line for our freedom at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs medical center in Tuscaloosa. When Anzelc is not helping out others in Tuscaloosa, she is extending a helping hand in her home state of Ohio at Zane's Foundation, where she helps to raise money for families with special needs.
Anzelc appeared in 10 games and made four starts on the year at midfield. In the Sept. 17 match against Chattanooga, Anzelc notched the game-winning goal, her first goal of the season and the first game-winner of her career, to help the Tide shutout the Mocs, 2-0. After four years at the Capstone, the Medina, Ohio native has played in 39 career games and has amassed two goals, 18 shots and five shots on goal.
