TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama junior Gilbert Kigen was selected as the NCAA South Region Men's Athlete of the Year, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday.
The Kipkabus, Kenya native won the NCAA South Region cross country championship on Nov. 10, completing the 10,000-meter course at the Alabama's Harry Pritchett Running Park in 29:44.5 to lead UA to a third-place finish. Kigen also placed second at the SEC Cross Country Championships and won the individual title at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational earlier this season.
Kigen is the second Tide runner to earn regional athlete of the year honors in the last three seasons, joining Antibahs Kosgei who was honored in 2015.
The Alabama men's team will be in action at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 18 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
