Junior Abbie Boswell netted a penalty kick 53 seconds into overtime, to give the Crimson Tide the win
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's soccer team won its third straight Southeastern Conference game for the first time since 2013, defeating Missouri, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
Junior Abbie Boswell netted the penalty kick 53 seconds into the extra period to propel the Crimson Tide (11-6-1, 3-5-1 SEC) past the Tigers (6-11-1, 2-7-0 SEC).
Sunday's victory also marked the first time in program history the Tide has topped the Tigers in Tuscaloosa.
"It was an interesting game," coach Wes Hart said. "We were a little bit flat today. I think we gave so much in the Arkansas game on Thursday night that we looked flat. Then, of course, Mizzou's a good team. They have so many attacking weapons. We ended up being a little bit too conservative, I think. We had a hard time joining the attack. We had so many numbers in the back to deal with [Jessica] Johnson, [Sarah] Luebbert, [Savannah] Trujillo and [Kaitlyn] Clark. They are just so good on the attacking side that I think it forced us into kind of a defensive shell. That's really what hurt us, but credit to our team for finding a way to get a result.
The Crimson Tide offense was led by Boswell who scored a pair of goals for the third time this season. Senior Alexis Mouton also tallied a goal to aid in the conference win.
It only took the Crimson Tide 24 seconds to find the back of the net, when Boswell launched one off the pass from senior Celia Jimenez Delgado past the goalkeeper to give the Tide the early edge.
Alabama created another opportunity in the 10th minute, when it was Jimenez Delgado to Boswell again, lifting a shot from just outside the box, but it was saved by the Missouri keeper.
Despite the 1-0 deficit, the Missouri offense responded fairly quickly in the 28th minute with an equalizer from just outside the box, but the Tide answered back nine minutes later when junior Christina Maartensson played a longball up to Mouton who dribbled past the Missouri keeper on the fast break to give UA the 2-1 advantage.
With a minute to go in the first half, Mizzou snuck in another goal with a 35-yard shot that deflected into the net to knot the game up, 2-2, at halftime.
The two teams increased their physicality in the second half, with 10 combined fouls and 12 shots, but neither squad could break the tie, sending the game into overtime.
At the start of the extra period, Alabama fiercely charged out of the gates, drawing a foul in the box to set up the game-winning goal off a penalty kick to give Alabama its second victory over the Tigers in program history.
Alabama was outshot, 20-12, in the conference showdown but earned seven corner kicks to Mizzou's one. Goalkeeper Kat Stratton picked up her third conference win of the season and made a conference-high of seven saves.
Alabama returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 26 to take on Ole Miss at 7 p.m. CT in Oxford, Miss.
