Junior Abbie Boswell scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's soccer team picked up its first Southeastern Conference win of the year by defeating Mississippi State, 3-2, in a double-overtime thriller on Senior Day Sunday evening at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Junior Abbie Boswell scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute to push the Crimson Tide (9-6-1, 1-5-1 SEC) past the Bulldogs (7-4-3, 1-4-2 SEC).
"We showed a lot of guts tonight, especially after losing four games in a row," head coach Wes Hart said. "It would have been very easy to hang our heads after giving up a two-goal lead, but credit to the girls, they fought their way back. Abbie Boswell missed a couple of chances at the end of regulation, but the first thing she said when she came off the field after the first overtime was, 'Give me one more chance I'm going to get the goal.'"
Sunday marked the Tide's first win over the Bulldogs in Tuscaloosa since 2010 and the first overtime victory over MSU in program history.
Three Crimson Tide student-athletes booted in goals to give Alabama three points in the conference standings. On Senior Day, senior Alexis Mouton opened up the match netting her first goal of the season in the 28th minute. Freshman Casey Wertz scored her third goal of the year to put the Tide up by two, and Boswell tallied her sixth goal of 2017 to solidify the win.
Alabama created its first opportunity of the match when junior Kayla Mouton sprinted the length of the field and found redshirt freshman Chloe Maize for the Tide's first shot of the game. Seconds later, freshman Taylor Morgan followed with another blocked shot.
In the 28th minute, senior Hailey Brohaugh lifted a shot in the box that was blocked and found its way to Alexis Mouton who buried it in the back of the net for the fourth goal of her career.
In the second half, the Alabama offense continued to put the pressure on Mississippi State in the 49th minute when junior Cat Jorgensen and senior Celia Jimenez Delgado combined for a double assist to Wertz, who headed the ball into the back of the net to extend the Tide's lead to 2-0.
Mississippi State had an opportunity to cut Alabama's lead in half with a penalty kick in the 61st minute, but the shot rolled wide right. Not deterred from the missed opportunity, MSU rallied back into the match in the 76th minute netting its first goal of the game off of a rebound and followed with a goal two minutes later on a free kick a couple of yards outside the box.
With the match tied at two apiece, both teams were eager to send in the game-winner to end the conference showdown, but the squads held each offense in check to send the game into overtime.
After the first extra-period ended with no goals, the two teams were determined to avoid a draw. In under two minutes, Kayla Mouton headed the ball over to Boswell who kicked it in to give the Crimson Tide the crucial SEC victory.
The Bulldogs outshot the Tide, 22-17, in the Sunday night battle and both squads delivered eight shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kat Stratton picked up her first conference win of the season in 101:51 minutes and made six saves.
Alabama returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 19 to take on Arkansas at 7 p.m. CT in Fayetteville, Ark.
