TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Crimson Tide men's tennis team spent a weekend training with The University of Alabama Army ROTC Cadre last week, and it went through many physically and mentally demanding obstacles in preparation for the season ahead.
Lieutenant Colonel (P) Jonathan L. Goode, Captain Scott Sloss, Major Christopher Peterson, Major Carrick McCarthy, Master Sergeant Michael Whitmill, Second Lieutenant Jordan Spivak, Cadet Jordan Jones, Cadet David Receniello, Cadet Michael Hill and Cadet David Spangler were responsible for putting the event together and overseeing the intense weekend of training.
"The UA Army ROTC Cadre developed a rigorous and highly stressful training plan that immersed the players into a military environment," said ROTC Captain Scott Sloss. "The training exposed them to training tasks common to soldiers, and forced them to utilize teamwork and leadership skills to succeed. The day began with Physical Readiness Training (PRT), which is led by the UA Army ROTC Cadets, and the day ended with resiliency-style classes that focused on character strengths, leadership and goal setting. Players were given the opportunity to complete the Leadership Reaction Course (LRC), construct a one-rope bridge and complete a rigorous three-mile march with 35 pound packs designed to force them to work together as a team to succeed."
"The success of this missions was not measured by how many event were completed but how each member of the team displayed the character confidence, perseverance, and passion to complete these events as a team," said Captain Sloss. "We look forward to seeing these young men put these same principles into action this season on the court and carry Alabama men's tennis all the way through the SEC and the NCAA Tournament."
"Our players and staff are indebted to The University of Alabama Army ROTC for their time, support and commitment in creating an invaluable experience for our program," said Alabama men's tennis head coach George Husack. "The purpose of the retreat as two fold; first, it was to serve as an ice breaker for our new and returning players; second, it was to challenge the players mentally, physically and emotionally. In a sense we wanted to make them comfortably uncomfortable. Well, the program hit the nail on the head and so much more. The players and coaches learned a lot about each other individually and as a group, as well as gained a massive amount of appreciation for what cadets must learn when they begin their own journey. I look forward to our next combined outing and continuing to grow our partnership with the Alabama Army ROTC."
