Alabama Women’s Golf Tops the National Rankings after Two Tournaments

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After two top two finishes to start the 2016-17 season, the No. 1-ranked Alabama women's golf team will take the next two weekends off from competition before returning to action at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina, Oct. 14-16 at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Through two tournaments, sophomore Cheyenne Knight and freshman Kristen Gillman are the Tide's top two golfers. Knight leads the team with a 68.17 scoring average, followed by Gillman at 69.50. Knight has first- and sixth-place finishes at the Mason Rudolph Championship and Schooner Fall Classic, respectively, to start the year, while Gillman has opened her college career with second- and eighth-place finishes.
Alabama Finishes Second at Schooner Fall Classic
The Alabama women's golf team shot an even-par 284 in the final round and finished second at the 2016 Schooner Fall Classic, held Sept. 24-25 at the par-71, 5,939-yard Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The Tide now has two top two finishes in its first two tournaments of the 2016-17 season.
The Crimson Tide (275-282-284/841) finished 11-under par, 12 shots behind tournament champion Florida State after the Seminoles carded a four-under par 280 on Sunday to finish 23-under par for the tournament (270-279-280/829). Clemson finished third at three-under par (281-285-283/849). Tournament host Oklahoma finished fourth at even par (283-285-284/852). Kent State finished fifth at six-over par (292-284-282/858).
Sophomore Cheyenne Knight again led the Tide, finishing sixth at six-under par (66-69-72/207). Freshman Kristen Gillman tied for eighth at three-under par (67-73-70/210). Junior Lakareber Abe (69-70-73/212) and sophomore Lauren Stephenson (73-70-69/212) tied for 12th at one-under par. Senior Mia Landegren tied for 35th at nine-over par (74-73-75/222).
Alabama in the National Rankings
The Crimson Tide's team score of 70.30 ranks No. 1 in the Golfstat statistical rankings released Sept. 26. Florida State (70.53), USC (70.60), Arkansas (71.00) and UCLA (71.13) round out the top five. The Tide also tops the latest Golfweek ratings with a score of 68.98 with the Seminoles (69.07), Trojans (69.85), Razorbacks (70.02) and Bruins (70.19) occupying spots 2-5.

Alabama will be off until Oct. 14-16 when the Tide travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Finley Golf Club. Alabama finished sixth in its last appearance at the Ruth's Chris in 2015.
