
Alabama Women’s Golf Returns to Action after Record Season-Opening Tournament

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's golf team travels to Norman, Okla. this weekend for the 2016 Schooner Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Oklahoma, at the par-71, 5,939-yard Belmar Golf Club Sept. 24-26. Joining Alabama in the field will be Clemson, Florida State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kent State, LSU, Mississippi State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and Texas State. This will be Alabama's first appearance in the Schooner Fall Classic.
Alabama Has Record-Setting Weekend at Mason Rudolph Championship
Alabama fired a 25-under par 263 on the final day of the 2016 Mason Rudolph Championship to storm to a school- and tournament-record 39-under par (284-278-263/825) victory at the par-72, 6,451-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club Sept. 16-18 in Franklin, Tenn.
Leading the way for the Crimson Tide was sophomore Cheyenne Knight, who set a new program-best score with a 14-under par 202 (68-67-67) to break the previous record of 13-under par (203) set by Kathleen Ekey at the 2008 Crimson Tide Classic.
Alabama set a number of other individual and team records during the three-day tournament. The team score and score vs. par surpass the previous records of 836 and 28-under par, respectively, set at the 2010 Tar Heel Invitational. The final round 263 is an 11-shot improvement over the old program record of 274, which was also set at the 2010 Tar Heel Invitational. Saturday's round of 278 ranks seventh all-time for the Tide.
Junior Lakareber Abe carded a school-record nine-under par 63 on the final day to surpass the old record by two shots. The third round performance pushed her into a tie for fourth in the final standings. Sophomore Lauren Stephenson fired a 65 on Sunday to equal the previous low-round record.
Alabama in the National Rankings
The Crimson Tide's team score of 69.73 ranks No. 1 in the Golfstat statistical rankings released Sept. 19. Oklahoma State (71.53), Florida (71.67), Illinois and Idaho (tied at 72.67) round out the top five.
Cheyenne Knight's 67.33 ranks No. 2 in the individual rankings. Kristen Gillman and Lauren Stephenson are tied for 10th at 69.00 and Lakareber Abe is tied for 15th at 69.67.

Following the Schooner Fall Classic, Alabama will be off until Oct. 14-16 when the Tide travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, hosted by the University of North Carolina at the Finley Golf Club. Alabama finished sixth in its last appearance at the Ruth's Chris in 2015.
