Davis Riley leads Tide finishing play in 22nd overall
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Alabama men's golf team fell six spots to finish in 13th overall at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational. The Crimson Tide carded rounds of 296, 289 and 298 to finish the three-day, 54-hole event with a team total of 883.
"We come to Olympia Fields every year because it's a golf course that will expose any deficiencies you may have and that's what happened," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "It doesn't feel good to get exposed but it also shows we have a lot we need to work on. The good thing is it's all correctable and we look forward to learning from it. We are playing undermanned and we have some of our new guys who have been thrust in new roles. We have to get better and our guys know that and are ready for the challenge."
Tournament host and third-ranked Illinois coasted to the team title, as the Fighting Illini (845) ended the event 13 strokes better than second place Oklahoma State (858). Texas A&M (864) finished third, followed by North Carolina (866) and No. 18 Florida State (867) to round out the top five, respectively.
Sophomore Davis Riley led the Tide with a three-day total of 8-over par 218 (68-74-76) to finish tied for 22nd overall. He was followed by junior Lee Hodges, who tied for 40th with a 12-over 222 (76-70-76), on the par 70, 7,205-yard Olympia Field Country Club North Course.
Redshirt freshman Josh Sedeno, playing in his first career tournament, tied for 45th overall with a 224 (77-72-75). Junior Steven Setterstrom, who carded the low final round of the day for the Tide with a 1-over par 71, ended play tied for 48th at 225 (76-78-71). Junior Tyler Hitchner rounded out the Alabama golfers as he tied for 58th with a 228 (76-73-79).
The Tide will next be in action on Oct. 3-4 when it hosts the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. Admission throughout the tournament is free to the public.
