TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Cheyenne Knight and Kristen Gillman advanced to the match play round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Open with victories on Wednesday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Pa.
Knight defeated UCF's Ashley Holder, 2 up, clinching the match with a birdie on 18 to cap off a bogey-free round. Gillman downed TCU's Annika Clark, 5 and 4, finishing with six birdies and no bogeys. Teammate Lauren Stephenson was eliminated from the competition when she fell to UCLA's Bethany Wu, 3 and 2.
The round of 32 and round of 16 are scheduled for Thursday. Gillman will tee off her match against South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Knight will face Japan's Nasa Hatoka at 8:40 a.m. Should Knight and Gillman win their morning matches, they would meet each other on Thursday afternoon for spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
Morning round coverage can be viewed on the web from 10-noon (ET) on usga.org. Thursday afternoon's round will air on Fox Sports 1 from 3-6 p.m.
The Crimson Tide's Emma Talley became the first Alabama golfer to win the Women's U.S. Amateur when she captured the title in 2013 at Charleston (S.C.) Country Club. Talley completed her senior season in May. Gillman won the event in 2014 as a 16-year old.
