FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Former Alabama men's tennis standout Saketh Myneni cruised past Serbia's Pedja Krstin, 6-3, 6-0, on Friday afternoon to advance to the main draw of the 2016 US Open. Myneni went 3-0 in the men's qualifying draw, clinching match victories in two set in all three matches.
The talented Alabama alumnus enters the main draw ranked No. 143 on the ATP charts, and the win marks the first time in his career that he will compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam event.
"This is a dream come true to play on the big stage," said Myneni after the victory. "This wouldn't have been possible without the support from everyone including my family, friends, support staff and my Greenwich family."
In the opening round of qualifying, Myneni topped France's Albano Olivetti in a 6-3, 7-5 decision. The momentum continued in the second round for Myneni as he outlasted USA's Mitchell Krueger, 7-6(6), 6-4, before securing his spot in the main draw with the third round victory over Krstin.
Main draw action begins on Monday, Aug. 29 and will culminate with the finals on Sunday, Sept. 11.
