ATLANTA – Andrew Goodwin, who played for the Crimson Tide men's tennis team from 2013-15, teamed up with former Charlotte 49er and fellow Alpharetta, Ga. native Vikram Hundal to win the doubles crown at the US Open National Playoffs Southern Sectional Qualifying Tournament. The duo, playing in only their second tournament together, defeated brothers Casey and Michael Kay, 6-1, 6-3, in the final match.
Goodwin graduated with a degree in business in December of 2015 and won the Tenacity Award in both his seasons with the program for being hardest worker on team. He served as undergraduate assistant coach in the fall of 2015 and a volunteer coach in the spring of 2016 after he graduated. Goodwin is currently serving in a coaching role with the USTA in its summer internship program.
The US Open National Playoffs begin as a series of 15 sectional qualifying tournaments, held in different USTA Sections nationwide. The 15 champions or top available finishers in each division from each sectional qualifier advance to the US Open National Playoffs Championships, held in conjunction with the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, an Emirates Airline US Open Series event, in New Haven, Conn., the week before the US Open.
The US Open National Playoffs men's and women's singles champions earn a wild card into the US Open Qualifying Tournament. The US Open National Playoffs men's, women's, and mixed doubles champions receive a wild card into the main draw of the 2016 US Open.
