The Battle Plan

A-Day 2016 Will Be a Special One
We look forward to another great A-Day weekend next week. The campus is beautiful, the spring weather has been very pleasant, and we look forward to seeing many of our former players back in town. We are celebrating Coach Nick Saban going into his 10th year at the University of Alabama.
We are ecstatic about the success Coach Saban, his staff and teams have achieved in getting Alabama back to the top of the college football world. It is our hope that all players who have played under Coach Saban's leadership will come back and participate in some of the many A-Day activities planned for the weekend.
The A-Club will have its annual golf tournament at Ol' Colony on Friday. On Friday evening all football lettermen will tour the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility, then will have dinner with Coach Saban in the South Zone at Bryant-Denny Stadium. All other lettermen will attend an A-Club Tailgate at Sewell-Thomas Stadium prior to the Alabama/Ole Miss baseball game, and then attend the baseball game and help Alabama beat Ole Miss in an important SEC contest.
On Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., football lettermen will participate in a flag football game in Bryant-Denny Stadium. At 12:15 p.m., the annual Captains' Ceremony will take place at Denny Chimes. It's my firm opinion, that being a captain of the Alabama football team is one of the greatest honors at the University. This year's captains (Reggie Ragland, Jake Coker, Derrick Henry and Ryan Kelly) are all very deserving of the honor, and will be forever memorialized in Alabama history with their names and handprints in concrete around Denny Chimes.
At 2 p.m., the Golden Flake A-Day Spring Football Game gets underway. Alabama fans will get to see the 2016 Crimson Tide team for the first time. This team will not look like the polished 2015 team we saw defeat Michigan State and Clemson in the College Football Playoffs. Many seniors, and a few juniors, have moved on to the NFL and life after graduation. Fifteen days of spring practice are used to experiment in looking at players at different positions, and trying to find combinations that get the best athletes on the field. Coach Saban's process goes through winter workouts, spring training, summer training and, then, fall training.
There is a lot of work ahead, but A-Day gives us a glimpse of the talent on hand. We hope to see pleasant surprises from players who didn't play much last year, but assert themselves in leadership and playmaking in scrimmages and games.
We would like to see the stadium fill up, much like it did in Coach Saban's first year. You can't believe how much it means to the team, the staff, recruits attending the game and those watching on The SEC Network around the country for our fans to show just how much they care about Alabama football.
I hope that you will take the time to come to the game, sit in the stands, and fully enjoy watching the beginning of the molding of this 2016 Alabama football team.
National Student Athlete Day
Tuesday, April 12, was National Student Athlete Day. But, to me, every day is student athlete day. Our mission is to recruit and develop our student athletes to be able to compete for championships and, equally as important, to compete in life after graduation. Hopefully, all decisions we make in the department every day are in support of carrying out that mission. We are very proud of the programs we have in place in our Academic Center to prepare our students for success off the fields and courts:
Advising services
We work with student-athletes on time management, major selection, course selection, career choices, faculty relations and a multitude of other aspects of their academic life.
Tutoring
Some 90 highly qualified tutors, including high school teachers, CPA's, lawyers and graduate students are available six days a week and around 70 hours per week. Many sessions are one-on-one.
Monitoring
Classes are checked regularly for attendance at class and study sessions. Coaches are informed weekly (daily in some cases) of our students' attendance in class. Tutors submit reports to our tutorial coordinator on every session. Grade reports are produced three times each semester. Coaches in each sport have their own methods of utilizing these reports to reinforce the efforts of the academic staff.
Counseling
Our career advisors assist players with resumes and interview skills. They also help develop networking skills. Career panels are set up in the spring and fall. Our staff works closely with the University Career Center in providing career counseling.
Lifeskills and Community Outreach
Through this program student-athletes are challenged to broaden their personal horizons through learning about such things as branding, confidence building, diversity and inclusion, and financial management. They are encouraged to participate in service opportunities in the community to expand their perspective and boost their civic responsibility. They are exposed to relevant welfare issues that impact their college experience, including such topics as alcohol and drug education, sexual harassment and sexual assault, and many others.
Leadership
This program is founded on the values of Dedication, Responsibility, Influence, Vision and Excellence (D.R.I.V.E.). The first two years of the D.R.I.V.E. program are focused on identifying career ambitions as related to their personal strengths and interests. The last two years are focused on developing their professional skills, while also expanding their network utilizing our worldwide network of A-Club members, the 1st and 10 Club, and other professionals in industries of interest.
Our desire is to lead and guide our student-athletes to have a positive experience in their chosen scholastic experience, to graduate in a reasonable amount of time, and to leave The University of Alabama well prepared to face the world as a productive citizen. We are in the process of developing programs to track their successes in life as they go forward and to keep them engaged in University of Alabama activities.
Crimson Choice Awards Banquet
Tuesday evening, April 19, in the Bryant Conference Center, my favorite event of the entire year will take place - the Crimson Choice Awards Banquet. This is an event entirely produced by our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee that presents awards for academic success, community service, spirit, courage and many other attributes outside purely athletic achievements.
All 525 of our student athletes are invited. They tend to sit together as teams and each team is very competitive as they vie for individual and team awards. They are also very exuberant when one of their own wins an award. The ladies dress like they are going to the Kentucky Derby (without hats) and are dressed in their Sunday finest. After seeing them around the athletic department so much dressed in shorts and sweats, it is impressive to me how they look all dressed up. The guys still need a little coaching with their dress but they still look good!
The quality of the awards and the competitive spirit shown, as honors are awarded are a clear illustration of just how much our student-athletes care about academics, life skills and their preparation for life after Alabama Athletics. It is both exciting and enjoyable for me to see this side of our student-athletes and teams. I encourage every person who has endowed a scholarship in athletics, or who may be thinking about endowing a scholarship, to attend one of these banquets. The experience will make you realize that there is hope for the younger generation and these are the types of people that will make the world better. These are the types of people we all should want to hire.
Obasohan & McCleney are Alabama's Nominees for SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Award
The SEC Office announced Thursday that two of our finest student-athletes, Haylie McCleney and Retin Obasohan, have been nominated for the SEC's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship presented annually to the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition to being excellent students and athletes, Haylie and Retin are tremendous ambassadors for The University of Alabama and our athletics department because they strive to make a difference in the community around them. Both have made extraordinary contributions to the success of their teams and are highly deserving of this latest honor. Haylie and Retin are living examples of our mission to compete for championships and build champions. Haylie is a senior on our nationally-ranked softball team while Retin recently finished his senior season on our men's basketball team. Both earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for their respective sports.
An exercise science major, Haylie has a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). She is a two-time First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American and was named the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year for Division I Softball in 2015. She is a three-time member of the SEC Honor Roll and is a finalist for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award. On the field, Haylie is a three-time All-American and one of only two players in program history to earn first-team honors as an All-American and Academic All-American in the same season. She has earned All-SEC honors three times and has been a nominee for the USA Softball Player of the Year award in all four seasons. She is on pace to set school career records for batting average and on-base percentage while also ranking in our all-time career top 10 in slugging percentage, hits, runs, triples, walks and stolen bases. Haylie has produced three of the top 10 single-season batting averages in Crimson Tide history and set a single-season record in 2015 with a .588 on-base percentage.
Retin earned a bachelor's degree in finance last August and is on track to graduate in May with a master's degree in marketing. He has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA in graduate school on his way to earning CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors. He is one of only three Alabama men's basketball players to earn academic all-district honors. As we know, Retin enjoyed a tremendous senior season, becoming the first Alabama player since 2013 to earn both All-SEC First Team and All-Defensive team honors. He was also named United States Basketball Writers Association All-District first team, while the National Association of Basketball Coaches selected him to its all-district second team. Retin led the Tide with 17.6 points per game. This season, Retin had 14 games in which he scored 20 or more points, in addition to leading the team in steals, field goals made and attempted, and free throws made and attempted. Retin was the first Tide player to average over 20 points per game in SEC play since the 1985-86 season, averaging 20.6 points per game against conference opponents.
One of the things we should be proudest of regarding our student-athletes is the fact that Crimson Tide students have earned the McWhorter Award nine times since its inception in 1986: 2014 - Cory Whitsett (golf); 2013 - Barrett Jones (football); 2008 - Joseph Sykora (golf); 2007 - Emeel Salem (baseball); 2004 - Lauren Imwalle (soccer); 2003 - Kristin Sterner (gymnastics); 1997 - Meredith Willard (gymnastics); 1992 - Jeff Laubenthal (baseball); and 1987 - Julie Estin (gymnastics).
Fulfilling the Mission: Connor Oslin is Our 5th Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2015-16
In addition to leading off Alabama's NCAA champion 200 medley relay, finishing runner-up at the NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke and earning his second consecutive SEC 100 backstroke title, junior Connor Oslin has been voted the SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league coaches. Connor carries a 3.9 grade-point average in biology while pursuing the pre-med track. A native of Kennesaw, Ga., Connor is a tremendous example of excelling in all aspects of the student-athlete experience. A champion in the pool and the classroom, Connor was also named a "Peach of an Athlete" by the Boy Scouts of America in his native Georgia and was honored at the organization's Role Model Banquet the week after the national championships. After Alabama students earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in four different sports last year, Connor becomes the fifth Alabama student-athlete to earn SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors for their respective sports during the current academic year, joining Lauren Beers (gymnastics), Retin Obasohan (men's basketball), Ryan Kelly (football) and Abby Lutzenkirchen (soccer).
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Lifetime Giving Society
We had a great day last Saturday with well over 200 members of the Crimson Tide Foundation's Lifetime Giving Society watching our football team's first scrimmage of 2016. The Lifetime Giving Society is an exclusive group of loyal supporters whose individual, lifetime contributions to the Crimson Tide Foundation (not including Tide Pride or ticket purchases) reach at least $50,000. There are four categories of the Lifetime Giving Society including: the Bryant Society ($1 Million+), Crimson Legacy ($500,000 - $999,999), Crimson Alliance ($100,000 - $499,999) and Crimson Circle ($50,000 - $99,999). Donors who reach Lifetime Giving Society status are our most generous, loyal supporters and we are humbled by their generosity and thrilled to recognize them for their contributions and thank them for their tremendous support. I was happy to have the chance to visit with so many supporters during last Saturday's scrimmage. Their excitement for Alabama Athletics is as strong as ever! If you are interested in learning more about the Lifetime Giving Society, please visit our website at www.crimsontidefoundation.org or call the CTF at 205-348-9727.

Sports Updates
Baseball
Coach Mitch Gaspard's team swept Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Thomas Burrows recorded his sixth save of the season in game one and ranks second in the conference and 23rd nationally in saves. The Tide shut out the Braves in a seven-inning second game, using three pitchers to limit ASU to two hits. The Tide travels to No. 19 Kentucky this weekend for an important SEC series. Our team has won two of three SEC series so far this season, and is second in the SEC West heading into the Kentucky series.
Men's Basketball
Guard Retin Obasohan has been selected to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, which is slated to begin on Wednesday, April 13, in Portsmouth, Va. The four-day, 12-game tournament, which will be held from April 13-16, is in its 64th year and will feature 64 seniors from various NCAA programs who will play in front of representatives from all 30 NBA teams, as well as scouts from international leagues. Retin is the third Alabama player in as many years, and seventh in the last nine years, to play in the event. Previous Tide players include: Levi Randolph (2015), Trevor Releford (2014), JaMychal Green (2012), Mikhail Torrance (2010), Alonzo Gee (2009) and Mykal Riley (2008).
Men's Golf
Coach Jay Seawell's team will compete at the SEC Championships on April 15-17 at the Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga. The Tide has won five SEC championships, including three in the last four years (2012, 2013 and 2014). Ranked fourth in the nation according to the latest Golfweek.com top-25 poll, the Tide closed play in third place at the Mason Rudolph Championship held April 2-3 in Nashville, Tenn. Alabama has placed in the top three in five of its last six stroke play events, winning four of those tournaments. Senior Tom Lovelady finished tied for fourth in the Mason Rudolph Championship individual competition, marking his third top-five finish over his last six stroke play events. Tom led the field in par four scoring average and eagles. Freshman Davis Riley had another solid tournament, placing 12th while notching 11 birdies over the tournament's three rounds as he tied for third, his seventh top-20 finish in nine tournaments this season. Junior Robby Shelton gave the Tide three top-15 finishers by tying for 14th. Sophomore Tyler Hitchner, playing individually (he was not a part of the Tide's team score), tied for 14th overall.
Women's Golf
Coach Mic Potter's team is back atop the Golfstat Top 25 ranking this week after an outstanding performance last weekend at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. In the stroke play round, the Tide earned the No. 3 seed in its bracket of match play and a chance to play for the team title. On Saturday, Alabama defeated Denver in its first matchup before getting by host No. 7 Georgia. In Sunday's championship, the Tide held off No. 6 UCLA to earn the title. Emma Talley had her best showing of her senior season, shooting 71 in stroke play and posting a 3-0 record in match play to lead the team to the crown. The tournament included the nation's top seven teams and used a format similar to what will be used for the NCAA Championships, making this result highly encouraging. For her efforts, Emma was named the SEC Women's Golfer of the Week. Coach Potter's team faces a quick turnaround as they are in Tempe, Ariz., this weekend competing in the PING/ASU Invitational.
Gymnastics
Coach Dana Duckworth and our gymnastics team keep rolling deeper into the championship season. Last Saturday, the Tide won its NCAA-best 31st regional championship, and 12th in a row, advancing to the NCAA Championships final site for the 34th consecutive year. Only Utah (with 35 finals appearances) has been to more and only Florida has been to as many as we have, though the Gators' total is not consecutive. The Tide was dominant in winning the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional, and as Coach Duckworth was quick to point out, our 10,000-plus fans (the largest crowd of any regional in the country this season) brought an energy and excitement to Coleman Coliseum that helped lift our ladies to a great performance, finishing more than a point ahead of the field (a huge margin in gymnastics). Now it's on to Fort Worth, Texas, and a chance at our seventh NCAA title since 1988. If you're in the Fort Worth area next Friday and Saturday, please make plans to join us at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Rowing
Coach Larry Davis's team continues its spring season this weekend in New Jersey at the annual Knecht Cup Regatta, one of the largest regattas of the spring, consisting of multiple rounds of racing over two days starting on Saturday. Alabama will send three Varsity 8s, three Varsity 4s and a Novice 8 to compete. The Tide is trying to build on its success in New Jersey at last year's event, when the team qualified six of its seven crews for event finals, including three Grand Final appearances. Larry's team is coming off a successful weekend that saw the squad split between two competitions. Part of the team stayed in Tuscaloosa, sweeping Drake in four races on the Black Warrior River on March 19. A smaller contingent traveled to Sacramento, Calif., to compete on Lake Natoma against San Diego State, Sacramento State and St. Mary's in a series of dual meets. There, Alabama won seven of its nine races including a weekend sweep from the Second Varsity 8+.
Softball
Coach Murphy and his team are coming off a big series win on the road against top-ranked Florida. The Crimson Tide handed the Gators its first home loss of the season on Friday, April 1, before Florida rebounded with a win in game two to even the series. On Sunday, the Tide earned a 3-0 victory to become the first SEC team to defeat Florida in a series in over a calendar year. Sunday's shutout was the first for any team against Florida in Gainesville since Alabama did it two years ago. A 3-0 week of pitching, including two wins against Florida, earned junior pitcher Sydney Littlejohn recognition on the conference and national levels. On Monday, Sydney was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week, her first of the season and third of her career. On Tuesday, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named her the National Pitcher of the Week. On Wednesday, she was also named the espnW Player of the Week. Freshman Reagan Dykes had a productive week at the plate to earn the SEC Freshman of the Week honor. Reagan collected a hit in all four games last week including two home runs to push her season total to a team-leading nine, the most home runs hit by an Alabama freshman since Jaclyn Traina (13) and Kaila Hunt (10) in 2011. A 14-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday was a historic win for our program, marking the 1,000th victory in our program's history. The Tide is the fourth SEC team to reach the 1,000-win milestone and the first among teams that began during the league's inaugural 1997 season. Since earning its first win in its inaugural game on Feb. 15, 1997, Alabama has built a 1,000-295 (.772) all-time record entering this weekend. The Tide welcomes Mississippi State for a three-game SEC series beginning tonight at 6:30 p.m. CT. Saturday's game at 2 p.m. will be 'Leona Lafaele Day', as the team will celebrate the career of the senior infielder. Sunday's series finale is slated to start at 1:30 p.m.
Swimming and Diving
Coach Dennis Pursley's swimming and diving team closed the 2016 season with a flourish, earning 225 team points (the most in program history) and finishing sixth at the NCAA Championships, Alabama's highest team finish since taking fifth in 1983. After taking 10th in 2015 and sixth this season, our men's team has posted consecutive top-10 finishes for the first time since taking eighth in both 1985 and 1986. On the way to that finish, juniors Connor Oslin and Pavel Romanov combined with sophomore Luke Kaliszak and junior Kristian Gkolomeev to earn Alabama's first NCAA relay championship in program history, taking top honors in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:22.28, just one-hundredth of a second off the NCAA record. In March, our women finished 28th at the NCAA Championships, their highest finish since 2005. In all, 35 men and women scored at the SEC Championships and 17 scored at the NCAA Championships. In conference honors that were released this week, Connor was named the SEC Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Laurent Bams was named the SEC Male Freshman Swimmer of the Year. Connor also earned first team All-SEC honors while Laurent, junior Bridget Blood, Kristian, freshman Robert Howard, Luke, junior Anton McKee, sophomore Christopher Reid, Pavel and senior Brett Walsh all earned second team All-SEC honors. It has been, by any measure, another very good year for our men's and women's swimming and diving programs as we continue to move forward and improve.
Men's Tennis
Coach George Husack's team has made great progress this season and their 14-10 overall record (5-5 versus SEC opponents) reflects that. The Tide has won the doubles point in 17 of 24 matches this season, including its last seven straight. In the latest Oracle/ITA rankings, sophomore Korey Lovett and freshman Mazen Osama moved up to No. 6 nationally in doubles, the highest ranking for an Alabama duo since 2007. In singles, Mazen stands at No. 54, while Korey comes in at No. 101. Sophomore Matthew Rossouw has been clutch for the Tide as of late, winning his last four consecutive singles matches, three of which were come-from-behind wins after dropping first sets. He also has won his last four in doubles with freshman Spencer Richey. Two regular-season matches remain on the schedule with a trip to No. 24 Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT in Starkville and a home match with Vanderbilt on Sunday, April 17, at 1 p.m. CT.
Women's Tennis
The Tide will be in action this weekend at the Alabama Tennis Stadium for the final time this season, facing sixth-ranked Florida this evening at 5 p.m. CT and hosting 10th-ranked South Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. Sunday's match against the Gamecocks will also serve as Senior Day for the team, as senior Natalia Maynetto will be honored prior to the start of the match. In this week's Oracle/ITA National Rankings, junior Erin Routliffe has moved up to 36th in singles while freshman Andie Daniell is 50th. Both have had solid seasons and have put themselves in position to earn a spot into the draw of the NCAA Singles Championship tournament.
Track & Field
Coach Dan Waters' track & field teams competed at two meets last weekend, the Pepsi Florida Relays and the Stanford Invitational. Numerous personal bests and performances that rank in the all-time top 10 performances in school history highlighted the weekend's action. In Gainesville, senior Ahmed Ali posted the third-fastest 200-meter time in school history (20.16 seconds). That time currently leads the nation in the event and is the fastest time run in the world this year under any conditions. Ahmed was selected as the SEC Men's Runner of the Week, the first weekly conference honor in his career, for that performance. Junior Vanessa Clerveaux recorded a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles, while senior Kimberley Ficenec's 800-meter time (2:05.96) is 10th in Crimson Tide history. The women's 4x100 relay group of Clerveaux, junior Diamond Gause, junior Alex Gholston and junior Quanesha Burks ran 43.76, equaling the fourth-fastest time in the history of the program. In the field events, sophomore Haley Teel now ranks fourth all-time at Alabama in both the women's discus and women's shot put. Haley is also currently top 20 on the NCAA list in both events. In the men's discus, junior Hayden Reed, junior Joe Williams and redshirt freshman Kord Ferguson all eclipsed the 60-meter mark. Williams and Ferguson set new personal bests while Reed's program was good enough for eighth in program history. Those three athletes all rank among the top eight nationally in that event while the Tide is one of a very few teams in track history to have three throwers post marks of 60 meters in the same season. In Palo Alto, senior Katelyn Greenleaf ran a time of 10:05.03 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, the second best time in Alabama history, while junior Hannah Waggoner's performance also earned her a spot on the school's all-time top 10 list. The Tide heads down to Baton Rouge, La., for the Battle of the Bayou meet hosted by LSU on Saturday.
