TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama women's golf team got off to a fast start on the first day of the 2016 Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Championship at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham. The Tide shot a 2-under par 286 to take a six-shot lead going into Saturday's second round.
"We got off to a good start and got to 8 or 9 under, I think, at one point and didn't finish great but it's always good to be in the lead," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "If we can be in the lead every day, I'll be happy."
Emma Talley and Lakareber Abe both shot 2-under par 70s on the day and are in a tie for third place one shot off the individual lead.
Freshman Cheyenne Knight shot an even-par 72 and sits in a tie for 10th. Nicole Morales carded a two-over par 74 and is in a tie for 17th. Janie Jackson finished the day at 3-over par 75 and is in a tie for 25th.
Florida shot a four-over par 292 to finish second on the day. They are followed by Missouri (295/+7). Georgia (296/+8) and Tennessee (297/+9) to round out the top five.
Saturday's second round will begin at 8 am. Alabama will tee off in the final pairing beginning at 9:40 am and will be paired with second place Florida and third place Missouri.
