BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the second time this season, Alabama swimming and diving sprinter Zane Waddell has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Waddell had a big weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational, leading Alabama to a team win after posting the fastest times in the nation by a freshman in the 50 and 100 freestyles. In the national rankings, he is currently seventh in the 50 freestyle (19.55) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (42.97). He is the only freshman in the top-14 in the 50 and the only freshman in the top-11 in the 100. He is also ranked 16th nationally in the 100 butterfly with a 46.96 and is one of only two freshmen in the top-16.
Waddell led off the nation's No. 1-ranked 200 and 400 freestyle relays and anchored the nation's third-ranked 200 medley relay. Part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays at the Georgia Tech Invitational, he was third in the 50 freestyle. He took second in both the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle, behind Florida's Olympic champion Caleb Dressel.
Following the Atlanta-based invitational, Waddell now ranks sixth in the 50 freestyle, fifth in the 100 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 100 backstroke all-time at Alabama.
