CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – As it has each of the previous 10 seasons, Alabama rowing opens its 11th season of competition at the Chattanooga Head Race Saturday, Oct. 8. The Crimson Tide is slated to compete in five races on the Tennessee River starting at 8 a.m. CT.
"The Head of the Chattanooga is a chance for us to get some of the kinks out and evaluate a lot of the things we've seen in practice," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "It is also the same race course we'll see later in the fall at the Head of the Hooch, which is a very big regatta, so this is a chance for our new rowers to see the course without the crowd we'll see later in the year."
Alabama opens competition with the Women's Collegiate 8+ at 8 a.m. CT with five boats amongst a field of 14. The Tide will race three pairs at 10 a.m. CT immediately followed by three doubles at 10:10 a.m. CT. Alabama will conclude its racing schedule in the afternoon with one boat in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8+ at 2 p.m. CT and four boats in the Women's Collegiate 4+ at 2:30 p.m. CT.
"We want go out and make sure we're doing the things we want to competitively," Davis said. "We'll know where we are and what we need to adjust before the Head of the Charles in a few weeks, which is a really big regatta. Chattanooga is a good time to shake things down, evaluate people and get familiar with the race course."
This weekend is the first of three fall races the Tide will compete in. Alabama will head to Cambridge, Mass. on Oct. 22-23 for the Head of the Charles before returning to Chattanooga for the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 5-6.
