Alabama Men’s Tennis Competes in Day One of USTA 10k Futures Tournament

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team collected three wins in the first round of the singles qualifying bracket in the first day of the USTA 10k Futures event in Birmingham, Ala., at the Highland Park Tennis Center. There are 119 athletes registered in the tournament, and the Crimson Tide had five student-athletes compete today.
Senior Ritchie Kruunenberg defeated Ecuador's Alexis Salazar in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Kruuenberg advanced to the second round where he will square off against Jocelyn Devillers of France tomorrow on court two at 11:30 a.m. CT.
The Tide's freshmen were dominant, as Alexey Nesterov and Thibault Cancel defeated each of their opponents in straight sets.
Nesterov topped the Alex Sklizovic of the U.S. in a 6-1, 6-1 decision. The talented freshman will take on Czech Republic's Miroslav Herzan as part of the second round tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. on court three.
Cancel took down France's Mathias Degarin in a 6-0, 6-1 decision, and he is set to take on Jibran Akhtar of the U.S. tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. on court four.
