BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama swimming and diving's Zane Waddell was named the Southeastern Conference Male Freshman Swimmer of the Week following last Friday's meet at Missouri, the league office announced Tuesday.
Waddell posted two of the nation's fastest times against the Tigers, helping lead the Crimson Tide to a decisive team win. The Bloemfontein, South Africa, native posted a 19.95 in the 50 freestyle - the fastest time by a freshman in the nation this season and the second-fastest time in the SEC this season. His 50 time was also the fourth-fastest time in the nation so far this season and ranks him just outside Alabama's all-time top 10.
Waddell also posted a 44.39 in the 100 freestyle in Columbia - the seventh-fastest time in the nation this season. His 100 time is also the fastest time by a freshman in the SEC and the third-fastest overall in the SEC this season.
Waddell and the Tide remain on the road for their next meet, traveling to Auburn, Ala. on Friday, Nov. 4 to take on in-state rival Auburn at 3 p.m.
