Alabama Men’s Tennis Competes in Day One of 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships

AUBURN, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team registered three victories in doubles play and five in singles play to complete the first day of competition in the 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Friday. The tournament is a four-day event and features 14 programs in the region.
The Tide's No. 26 nationally ranked doubles duo in sophomore Mazen Osama and junior Matthew Rossouw earned a first round by in the singles main draw, and in the second round the duo topped Pierre Noyon and Clement Marzol of South Alabama in an 8-5 decision. Alabama's seniors Ritchie Kruunenberg and Hayes Brewer defeated Michail Eslpov and Chris Wickins of Southern Miss, 8-4, before advancing to the second round where the pair outlasted Auburn's Brandon Laubser and Charles Sarrio in a 9-7 decision.
Tomorrow's doubles round of 16 is set to start at 8:00 a.m. CT, and Kruunenberg and Brewer are set to square off against Filip Kraljevic and Babic Zvonimir of Ole Miss, while Osama and Rossouw are set to battle Jamie Fraser and Arthur Libaud of Louisiana.
In singles play, sophomore Langford Hills picked up a quick win as he forced Sam Messen of Nicholls State to retired in the first set with the score at 4-2. Osama, Rossum and freshman Alexey Nesterov received a bye in the round of 128 singles bracket, and the trio took advantage of the bye as all three went on to tally victories in the round of 64. Alabama's No. 34 ranked singles player in Osama outlasted Wenpo Tseng of Southern Miss, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, in a three set thriller. Rossouw overcame Eddie Nguyen of Southeastern Conference foe Auburn in a 7-5, 6-1 decision. Nesterov topped Eduardo Lourido of Samford in a match that was decided in three frames, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, to advance to the round of 32.
Saturday's singles matches are set to begin at noon CT.
The singles and doubles champions advance to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., in November.
