"We take a great deal of pride in the fact that five of our teams earned this prestigious honor," University of Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle said. "We are also proud to stand at the forefront of the highly competitive Southeastern Conference in this vital area."
The Alabama men's cross country team and the men's golf team joined the gymnastics teams as well as the women's golf and tennis squads in earning the honor in 2015. The women's golf team was honored for the fifth year in a row while women's tennis was recognized for the fourth year in a row.
Each year the NCAA honors select Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This award is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multi-year APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
"We are not only proud of the number of Crimson Tide teams that earned the honor this year, but also that we have had at least one team honored in this manner every year since the award's inception in 2005," Battle said.
Crimson Tide teams have earned the NCAA honor 23 times over the past eight years. The overall APR report covering all sports will be released next week.
