Four Top 10 Finishes Highlight Windy Saturday at Knecht Cup

CAMDEN, N.J. - Alabama Rowing opened action at the 2015 Knecht Cup Regatta with four top 10 finishes, advancing all four of its competing boats to Sunday's semifinal or final rounds despite very adverse conditions on the water.
All four of the Tide's boats on Saturday finished at least sixth overall, competing in fields of at least 20 in each race. Alabama started the day with a fourth place finish in the Varsity 4, placing second in its heat with a time of 7:42.81. Alabama's Second Varsity 4 nearly matched its Varsity 4 counterparts, crossing the line in 7:53.71 to place fifth overall and third in its heat.
After those races, winds at Mercer Lake were so intense that the races were postponed with the teams on a stand-by delay. The conditions eventually improved, allowing two of Alabama's 8 boats to race on Saturday. The Second Varsity 8 finished fifth overall, second in its heat, with a time of 6:53.96 while the Varsity 8 placed sixth overall, third in its heat, in 6:44.89.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, three additional crews will have to wait until tomorrow morning to see their first action of the weekend, as the Novice 4, Novice 8 and Third Varsity 8 will now compete in preliminary rounds on Sunday morning. In the Novice 4 and Novice 8, the top seven times will move to the Grand Final, the next seven times will move to a Petite Final and the next seven times will compete in a Third Final. In the Third Varsity 8, the top two in each heat plus the next two fastest time will move to Sunday's final round.
Alterations were made to the Second Varsity 4 field and Alabama will now move directly to Sunday's Grand Final race, which is set to start at 9:36 a.m. CT. The Varsity 4, Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 will each compete in a semifinal round for a chance to qualify for various final rounds on Sunday. The top two boats in each semifinal heat move to a Grand Final, third and fourth place move to the Petite Final while fifth and sixth place compete in a Third Final.
