Rowing Splits Four Races Against Jacksonville Saturday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama welcomed Jacksonville to Tuscaloosa on Saturday, as the Crimson Tide won the Second Varsity 8 and the Varsity 4.

"Overall I think we did really well," said Head Coach Larry Davis. "There were a few things that we need to get better at with some of our crews but some of the groups really nailed it today. Our varsity 4 and second varsity 8 really executed the way we planned it."

Alabama fell in 1V8 to open the day but rebounded with a strong win in the 2V8, beating Jacksonville by nearly 16 seconds with a time of 7:17.4. Alabama's four boats in the 1V4 each took the top four spots, with the leading boat crossing the line in 7:57.5. The final race of the day, the Novice 8, was neck-and-neck down the stretch but a late push by Jacksonville in the last 200 meters pushed the Dolphins ahead as they won by less than two seconds. Alabama's top boat finished with a time of 7:23.9.

"Rowing against a quality team like Jacksonville that has made the NCAAs, we knew it would be a good test," said Davis. "We'll have some time to improve things before we compete in New Jersey in a couple weeks."

Next up, Alabama will have a week off of competition before its next event on April 11-12 at the Knecht Cup Regatta in Camden, N.J.
