DULUTH, Ga. - University of Alabama All-American and Elite 89 Award winner Lauren Beers has been named to the 12th-annual Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Community Service Team, the league office announced Friday.
"I'm very proud of everything our ladies do in the community," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "It is one of the hallmarks of this program. This is just another way in which Lauren is the epitome of what we look for in an Alabama gymnast. She works very hard in the gym and the classroom and has a giving spirit which shines in the community."
A three-time All-American, Beers earned a place on the SEC team after working with Habitat for Humanity, as a volunteer with the "Yeah Yeah Yeah" 5K race, Read Bama Read, Project Angel Tree, the RISE School, Verner Elementary and Holy Spirit Elementary School as well as Tide Tykes and Teens while also taking part in creating a video PSA against Human Trafficking.
A two-year Scholastic All-American and winner of the 2014 NCAA Elite 89 Award, Beers carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average for her career while majoring in exercise science. This season she leads Alabama in individual event titles (20) and routines in competition (41) going into Saturday's SEC Championships.
The SEC sponsors a Community Service Team for each of the 20 sports it sponsors. The Gymnastics Community Service Team represents eight SEC gymnasts, one from each competing institution, highlighting an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Previous Crimson Tide honorees are: Kim Jacob (2014, 2013), Ria Domier (2012), Alyssa Chapman (2011), Kassi Price (2010), Ricki Lebegern (2009, 2008), Courtney Priess (2007), Dana Pierce (2006, 2005) and Stephanie Kite (2004).
Beers and No. 5-ranked Alabama begin the postseason Saturday with the SEC Championships in the evening session that gets underway at 6 p.m. ET in The Arena at Gwinnett Place in Duluth, Ga.
