OXFORD, Miss. - The Alabama women's tennis team took down the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels by a final score of 4-1 on Friday evening in Oxford, Mississippi. Playing on just three indoor courts, Alabama claimed the doubles point, and took three of four completed singles matches to secure the victory. The Crimson Tide has now reeled off four consecutive victories, and has won nine of its last ten matches overall.
Alabama jumped out to another early 1-0 lead by claiming its third straight doubles point, receiving a pair of convincing wins on courts one and three. Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen continued their dominant season for the Tide, grabbing a quick 8-2 victory on court one. Routliffe and Jansen are now a perfect 12-0 on the season. Not far behind for the Tide was Danielle Spielmann and Luicelena Perez who clinched the doubles point with a commanding 8-1 victory on court three.
Ole Miss put its only point on the board to begin singles play, as Arianna Hartono knocked off Spielmann by a final score of 6-0, 6-0 on court two. Quickly answering for the Tide was Erin Routliffe who continued her recent surge of late, knocking off Ole Miss' No. 12 Julia Jones 6-2, 6-3 on court one. Routliffe - who took home SEC Player of the Week honors last week - has now defeated the No. 6 and No. 12 nationally ranked singles players in two of her last three matches. Maya Jansen pushed Alabama's lead to 3-1 with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 win on court three.
Clinching the match for Alabama was Emily Zabor who took down a back-and-forth 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision over Ole Miss' Natalie Suk on court four. Zabor dropped the second set 2-6, but never trailed in the first or third sets. Maynetto (6-2, 6-6) and Perez (6-7, 3-2) went unfinished.
The Tide will remain on the road and face the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT in Starkville. Mississippi State enters this weekend ranked 41st nationally, the team's highest ranking in over nine years - since Jan. 31, 2006 - when the Bulldogs were ranked at No. 33. The Bulldogs have taken down eight of their last ten matches.
