Alabama rowing signed seven student-athletes during the early signing period who will join the team for the 2016-17 season. Over the coming days, we will be posting individual profiles on rolltide.com for the each member of the class. Our second profile is on Peyton Cowell from San Diego, Calif.
After a formative background in softball and cheerleading, Peyton Cowell made the fortuitous choice to try out for the rowing team as a freshman at Cathedral Catholic in San Diego, Calif. It started as an effort to stay in shape during softball's offseason but quickly grew to become her favorite sport, as she continued competing in crew during the spring instead of softball.
"Peyton is a great find for our program," head coach Larry Davis said. "She's developed under the guidance of an Olympic and World Champion and has proven herself to be a great competitor."
Cowell's former coach, Jen Helssen, pushed her to row in more competitive program. Cowell soon joined the San Diego Rowing Club and, under the guidance of Olympic gold medalist Susan Francia, Cowell's boats have been very successful. Her Four placed fourth at the Head of the Charles with her in the bow seat while she took home a pair of gold medals in the Youth Eight and Youth Four at the San Diego Fall Classic.
"What's truly exciting is Peyton has only begun to scratch the surface of her ability," Davis said. "We're looking forward to her being a major player in helping us achieve our goal of competing at the NCAA Championships during her tenure at Alabama. Peyton can't become part of our Crimson Tide Rowing Family soon enough!"
At Cathedral Catholic, Cowell serves as an Ambassador, giving prospective students and their families a tour of the school while also helping at various school events. She also participates in Options Aid in which mentors like Cowell assist students with mental and learning disabilities in class.
