Alabama rowing signed seven student-athletes during the early signing period who will join the team for the 2016-17 season. Over the coming days, we will be posting individual profiles on rolltide.com for the each member of the class. Our first profile is on Ariana Sweany from Vacaville, Calif.
Ariana Sweany is a relative newcomer to the sport of rowing, picking up an oar for the first time just over a year ago. She previously enjoyed a successful eight-year swimming career before her coach at Vacaville High School in Vacaville, Calif. suggested she try rowing. She has quickly grown passionate for her new sport, currently competing with the River City Rowing Club in West Sacramento, Calif.
"While being fairly new to rowing, Ariana has shown she has a gift for the sport," Alabama head coach Larry Davis said. "Her background as competitive swimmer prepared her for early success as a rower and honed her into a tough competitor."
After less than a year with the sport, Sweany spent the past summer competing with Penn AC's intensive summer program, qualifying for the Grand Finals of the Independence Day Regatta and posting a strong finish at Club Nationals. In addition to her athletic prowess, Sweany has dedicated much of her time to volunteer efforts. She has taken four mission trips to help build homes and volunteer at the House of Grace Orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico.
"Ariana comes to Alabama with strong academic credentials and a history of community service and outreach," Davis said. "Her balance of athleticism, academic prowess and love of service will play a big role in our team's future success on all fronts."
