Bloomington, Ind. - University of Alabama sophomore Nathan Karr won the men's shot put on Friday at the Indiana Relays. Karr, a native of Tuscaloosa who attended American Christian Academy, won the competition with a throw of 54 feet, 8 1/4 inches (16.67 meters). Karr and women's shot putter Haley Teel were the only Alabama athletes in action on Friday, as the Crimson Tide throws contingent made the trip to Bloomington this weekend.
The effort is a personal best for Karr and marks his first victory in the event for the Crimson Tide. Karr's series went 52-1 1/4 (45.88 meters), 53-1 1/2 (16.19m), followed by the winning mark of 54-8 1/4 (16.67). Karr then fouled on his fourth and fifth attempts before closing the competition with a throw of 53-4 1/4 (16.26).
In the women's shot put, freshman Haley Teel (Portland, Texas/Gregory-Portland High School) placed third with a throw of 47-11 3/4 (14.62).
Action continues Saturday for the Alabama Track & Field team as the bulk of the team will compete in the New Mexico Team Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., the first team scoring meet of the season. Meanwhile, Alabama's throws contingent will continue action at the Indiana Relays.
