LEXINGTON, Ky. - In its second road trip of the season, the No. 6 ranked Alabama gymnastics team beat No. 24 Kentucky, 196.700-195.625 in Memorial Coliseum in front of a crowd of 2,759 Friday night. The Crimson Tide climbs to 3-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Southeastern Conference competition.
"That was a hard earned 196.7," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "We earned every tenth out there tonight."
Alabama swept the individual events. Sophomore Katie Bailey won the all-around with a 39.200, while juniors Carley Sims and Lauren Beers tied for first on the vault. Beers came back and won the uneven bars. Senior Kaitlyn Clark won the balance beam while junior Carley Sims won the floor exercise.
"We were able to get a lot of new faces out there tonight and when we had trouble who ever followed them was able to focus on the next second and keep moving forward," Duckworth said. "That's what we ask them to do."
Alabama closed out the night with a strong balance beam rotation, posting a 49.300. Clark scored a 9.9 to lead the way. Senior Kayla Williams led things off with a 9.875 while Bailey and sophomore Keely McNeer both scored 9.85s. Kentucky closed things out with a 49.100 on the floor exercise.
"One of the building blocks to greatness is going to beam for the last rotation and hitting," Duckworth said. "We were able to do that tonight and take a step forward toward greatness."
On the floor exercise, Carley Sims led the way with a 9.9 in the anchor spot, pacing the Tide to a 49.250. Senior Hunter Dennis led things off with a 9.8 while senior Lora Leigh Frost posted a 9.850. Sophomores Aja Sims and Bailey scored 9.825 and 9.875, respectively. While the Tide was on the floor exercise, Kentucky posted a 48.925 on the balance beam.
The Tide scored a 49.300 on the vault behind 9.9s from Carley Sims and Beers. It was a career-best score for Carley Sims. Sophomore Keely McNeer started things off with a 9.825 on the vault while Williams closed out the rotation with a 9.875. Meanwhile, the Wildcats scored a 49.000 on the uneven bars.
Alabama started things off with a 48.850 on the uneven bars, led by Beers' 9.875, which was good for the individual title. It marked her fourth consecutive uneven bars win of the season. At the same time, across the gym, Kentucky started the meet off with a 48.600 on vault.
