TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - With the start of official practices just around the corner, the Alabama gymnastics team took care of some business left over from last season on Saturday when the 2014 squad received their SEC Championship rings during halftime of the Alabama-Southern Mississippi football game in front of 101,821 fans.
For Sarah and David Patterson, who stepped down as the Tide's coaches in July, it was their 12th trip to midfield during an Alabama football game to pick up championship rings in their illustrious career. The tradition started in the fall of 1988 when the duo took their first champions (NCAA and SEC) to midfield and continued on through last weekend, which marked their third trip in the last four years (NCAA and SEC in 2011, NCAA in 2012 and SEC in 2014).
Among those who received their rings were gymnasts Dominique Pegg, Amanda Jetter, Keely McNeer, Mary Lillian Sanders, Aja Sims, Katie Bailey, Carley Sims, Lauren Beers, Hunter Dennis, Kaitlyn Clark, Lora Leigh Frost, Kayla Williams, Ria Domier, Lindsey Fowler, Sarah DeMeo, Diandra Milliner and Kim Jacob as well as coaches Dana Duckworth, Bryan Raschilla and the Pattersons.
Managers Grey Buxton, Anderson Lovelace, Elizabeth Plant and Blake Sellers along with athletic trainer Monica Kirkpatrick and strength and conditioning coach Stephen Buckner also received their rings at midfield.
