Men's Golf Finishes in Ninth at OFCC/Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Alabama men's golf team closed play at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational on Sunday, finishing in ninth overall with a team total of 897 (300-296-301).
Sophomore Robby Shelton led the Tide with a sixth-place showing, closing the tournament with a 6-over par 216 (73-71-72) on the famed par 70, 7,142-yard Olympia Field Country Club North Course. Shelton, who won medalist honors at the event last season, collected his 10th career top-10 finish in 14 tournaments played at Alabama.
Junior Tom Lovelady tied for 25th overall with a 223 (73-75-75), followed by sophomore Robby Prater who tied for 42nd overall at 228 (79-73-76). Sophomore Dru Love (77-77-81) and freshman Jonathan Hardee (77-80-78) both carded a 235 and tied for 64th overall.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide was one of 10 schools competing in the tournament that were ranked among the Golf Coaches Association of America Preseason top-25 poll. Tournament host and sixth-ranked Illinois stormed back from an 8-stroke deficit to finish with a total of 861 and claimed the tournament title by 11 strokes over No. 17 Florida State (872). Second round leaders Baylor (876) finished in third, followed by No. 7 Stanford (882). Oklahoma State (885), which shares the No. 1 ranking with Alabama, rounded out the top five.
Alabama will return to action when it competes at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 28-29. The event, hosted by UAB alumnus and PGA pro Graeme McDowell, will be played at the Shoal Creek Country Club.
