"I just want to credit Jacksonville State for doing such a good job," said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. "I've had a lot of respect for them over the years, and I have a lot of respect for those guys. They have some older kids who really made big, big shots. My hats off for those kids, and to (JSU Head Coach) Rick (Pietri). They did a great job tonight."
The Tide was led by sophomore Ashley Williams' career-high 26 points. She also contributed nine rebounds and two assists to the Alabama total. Freshman Hannah Cook had 18 points and added four rebounds with three assists on the night. Brianna Hutchen led the Tide in rebounds with 10.
Alabama trailed for most of the game, but turned things in its favor at the 9:34 mark when a 9-0 run helped UA earn its first lead of the game, 43-42. From that point forward the two teams traded baskets until JSU scored the deciding bucket with three seconds to play. Alabama outrebounded JSU, 46-28, but could only generate 14 second-chance points. The Gamecocks 41 percent shooting on 9-of-28 from behind the arc helped keep the lead just long enough to earn the win over the Tide.
Alabama hits the road for the first time this season as it heads to Lawrence, Kan., for the Hall of Fame Women's Challenge. The Tide will begin the three-day tournament on Friday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. CT against host Kansas.
