TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama's Cory Whitsett secured one of the more prestigious amateur titles this past weekend with a victory at the Northeast Amateur at the Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I., while teammate Justin Thomas posted a 30th-place showing at the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship.
Whitsett, from Houston, Texas, shot a final-round 6-under-par 63 for a two-shot win over Georgia Tech's Bo Andrews. Whitsett, who begins his senior season at Alabama this fall, fired four rounds in the 60s on the par-69 layout, including an opening round 66 followed by rounds of 68 and 69.
Thomas, who will be a junior at Alabama in the fall, received a sponsor's exemption into the Travelers Championship and competed as an amateur.
Thomas opened with a round of 2-over 72 and followed with a 4-under 66 to make the cut. Another 66 in the third round moved Thomas into the top 15. He shot a final-round 73 for a 3-under-par total of 277.
Crimson Tide senior Trey Mullinax also finished tied for 39th at the Northeast Amateur with a 11-over 287.
