MOBILE, Ala. - The Alabama soccer team continued its goal scoring ways as it downed South Alabama, 9-0, Friday night at The Cage. With the win the Crimson Tide remain perfect at 4-0-0 on the season.
The 9-0 decision was the biggest victory for the Tide since Sept. 19, 2007, against Alabama State. Freshman Katie Bourgeois scored just over two minutes in and the onslaught continued throughout the match as the newcomer scored four times on the evening.
The four goals are the third most ever scored in a single game by a Crimson Tide player. The rookie now has six on the season in just four matches.
Junior Molly Atherton also had a multi-goal game as she found the net once in each half. Sophomore Theresa Diederich and seniors Kaitlyn Smith and Lindsey Sillers also joined the action.
Alabama scored just twice in the first half but completely broke the game open with seven second half goals, including three tallies in the span of two minutes.
Junior goalkeeper Shelby Church recorded her third shutout of the season on the strength of four saves. Alabama was peppering the USA goal all contest as it outshot the Jaguars, 36-7. Bourgeois and Khanna paced the Tide with six shots apiece.
Alabama will return to the Alabama Soccer Stadium to face off against the Mercer Bears. Kickoff is set for Sunday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. CT.
