NAIRN, Scotland - Great Britain and Ireland made a charge during the afternoon round of best-ball on Saturday to cut the United States lead to 6.5 to 5.5 during the 2012 Curtis Cup at the par-72 Nairn Golf Club.
With cool and rainy conditions throughout Saturday's two rounds, the GB&I team took advantage of the familiar surroundings to make Sunday's eight singles matches very interesting. USA will need 3.5 points to retain the Curtis Cup while the GB&I team will need 4.5 to claim its first Curtis Cup in seven tries.
Team USA actually got off to a strong start in the morning foursomes of alternate shot, winning two of the three points up for grabs. However, the GB&I team rallied in the afternoon best-ball with two wins and a half to get within a half point of the Americans.
Alabama's Brooke Pancake and Stephanie Meadow both played well for their respective teams. Pancake, teamed with Austin Ernst for the third time, continued her winning ways with a victory in the morning foursomes and then a half point in the afternoon. Pancake has accounted for 2.5 of the American's six points in four matches.
Meadow, from Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, and playing for GB&I, won two points on Saturday. She teamed with Leona Maguire in the morning to defeat USA's Lindy Duncan (Duke) and Lisa McCloskey (Southern California), 3 and 1. She then joined Pamela Prestwell in the afternoon to defeat Tiffany Lua (UCLA) and Erica Popson (Tennessee), 2 up.
Both Pancake and Meadow will anchor the backend of their respective teams in Sunday's singles matches. Meadow will be the seventh match and face Amy Anderson. Pancake will be the American's final player, taking on Maguire.
