Eppinger In Second After First Day of Heptathlon

Senior Kaylon Eppinger wrapped up the first day of the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships by moving into second place in the heptathlon.
Through the first four events of the seven-event competition Eppinger racked up 3,417 points to pull within 38 points of the leader, Arkansas' Makeba Alcide.
Eppinger opened the day strong by matching a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time of 13.52 to finish second. In the high jump, she cleared a season-best 5-7 to tie for fourth and won the other field event on the day, the shot put, with a throw of 40-9.75, the best throw in the field by more than seven inches. In the only other event on the track, she turned in a time of 25.68 to finish ninth in the 200 meters.
Competition for Eppinger and the other 10 competitors in the heptathlon field resumes on Friday at 2:15 p.m. with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. Her teammates also begin competition on Friday starting with the women's hammer throw at 11:30 a.m. followed by qualifying heads in the 800, 200, 10,000 and 400-meter hurdles on Friday afternoon at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge, La.
