TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama men's golf team is ranked No. 2 in the most recent GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll. The poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Alabama climbed four spots since the last edition of the poll was released. Texas is the only team ahead of the Crimson Tide with the Longhorns receiving 14 of the possible 20 first-place votes. Alabama received three first-place votes. Rounding out the top five is No. 3 Auburn with California and UCLA tied for fourth.
In five events this spring, Alabama has captured three team titles and two individual honors, with team wins coming at the Puerto Rico Classic, the Schenkel Invitational and the Linger Longer Invitational. Individual titles for the spring include Justin Thomas's win at the Puerto Rico Classic and sophomore Cory Whitsett's victory at the Linger Longer Invitational.
Recently, Thomas was named a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award, which is given annually to the top golfer in the NCAA, regardless of division or classification. Thomas leads the way for the Tide this year with a 70.96 scoring average and is tied with Cory Whitsett with two medalist honors.
Alabama returns to action on April 20-22, when the Tide travels to Sea Island, Ga., to compete in the SEC Championships, which are hosted at the Seaside Golf Course.
