BATON ROUGE, La. - The 17th-ranked women's tennis team defeated the LSU Tigers, 4-0, on Friday at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide stands at 8-2 on the season and 3-0 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers fall to 6-4 overall and 1-2 against league foes.
"This was an impressive showing tonight," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We sat around all day waiting on rain, and I thought the team handled the situation well. We came out ready to go and ready to work. Everybody got into their matches early, winning first sets on five courts. I am just so pleased with the way we competed tonight."
Due to inclement weather, the teams would start off with, and only end up playing, singles. Alabama sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane, ranked 21st, finished first, defeating LSU senior Olivia Howlett 6-0, 6-2 on court one. Senior Taylor Lindsey increased the lead to two when she defeated Tiger sophomore Yvette Vlaar, 6-2, 6-2 on court six. Alabama junior Alexa Guarachi, ranked No. 61, pulled out a tight first set on court two before finishing off Tiger senior Whitney Wolf 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Alex Clay clinched the match for the Tide, defeating junior Ebie Wilson 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 4 position.
Play was suspended after Alabama clinched the match.
The Tide remains on the road for its second contest of the weekend, which will take place at Arkansas on Sunday at Noon.
