TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The University of Alabama track and field team has joined with Men Who Cook to present the Taste of Tuscaloosa in conjunction with this weekend's Alabama Relays on Saturday evening from 5-7 p.m.
As the relays gear up on the track, Men Who Cook will be preparing and various culinary treats adjacent to the Sam Bailey Track Stadium to vie for the honor of `Best of the Best' in five different categories. Tickets for Saturday's festivities are a $10 with a portion of the proceeds going to various Tuscaloosa charities including the Alzheimer's Support Group, the Foster Grandparent Program and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs of Tuscaloosa and Hale Counties.
"This will give fans the opportunity to enjoy a fair-like atmosphere along with the relays," UA head coach Dan Waters said. "You can enjoy some great food for a great cause while watching some of the best athletes around compete on the track."
Nearly 20 teams have registered for the Taste of Tuscaloosa and the track and field program has enlisted the services of three honorary judges to help determine the winners in each category. Lillie Leatherwood, a former UA track standout, Olympian and three-time NCAA Champion, will be joined by Matt Self of Alabama Athletics compliance office and Aaron Vold of the Crimson Tide Foundation. The trio will help select winners in categories such as best beef, best poultry, best pork, best soup or chili, and best presentation.
"I'm really looking forward this weekend and honored to be one of the Taste of Tuscaloosa judges," Leatherwood, who is currently officer with the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said. "I've come back to the Alabama Relays a few times over the years, but I'm thrilled to have a part in the event this year."
"I'm excited to be a part of what Coach Waters and the Men Who Cook have put together," Self added. "As a connoisseur of food, I'm looking forward to lending my talents to this event."
Tickets for Saturday's event are available via the Athletic Ticket Office at 205-348-2262 or online at www.RollTide.com/tasteoftuscaloosa.
