ATLANTA - Senior women's tennis player Courtney McLane was honored by the Atlanta Area Council, Boy Scouts of America by being named one of the 2012 Peach of an Athlete Roll Models. The award, in its 28th year, is given annually to deserving athletes whose character, scholastic achievement, athletic excellence and commitment to community service most closely match the aims and ideals of the Scouting program.
"I am honored and humbled to be recognized as a Peach of an Athlete Roll Model," said McLane. "As student-athletes, we have been given such a tremendous opportunity to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of those around us. It was also powerful to see how the other honorees are using the platforms their sports have given them to make an impact on their campuses."
McLane, who hails from Lawrenceville, Ga., has earned numerous accolades throughout her career for both athletic and academic achievements. Last season, she was named the Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year as well as a Capital One Academic All-America Second Team selection. McLane, a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll member and member of the University Honors Program, finished her undergraduate degree in three years, holding a 4.0 GPA throughout. She is currently pursuing a graduate degree in marketing.
McLane has also had much success on the courts, twice being named to the All-SEC Second Team. In 2011, McLane was a two-time SEC Player of the Week and earned a career-high and program-best national ranking of No. 2 in doubles with partner Alexa Guarachi. The duo also set the Alabama record for doubles wins in a season with 29. She competed in back-to-back NCAA Doubles Championships as well as the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Currently, McLane has helped the Crimson Tide to its highest national team ranking under head coach Jenny Mainz and second highest all time as Alabama comes in at No. 14.
McLane's community involvement includes various projects including Toys for Tots, Project Angel Tree, Read Across America, Walk to Defeat ALS and Quick Start Tennis Clinics. In addition, she spent the summer of 2011 interning with Growing Leaders, which is an Atlanta-based non-profit organization created by Dr. Tim Elmore to develop emerging leaders.
"It is very fitting that Courtney was recognized for being a role model," said Mainz. "She is the consummate student-athlete. She has been and served as an incredible example to all of our younger players. She has the ability to serve others, and has been an incredible ambassador for our program as well as the University of Alabama. She is going to take all of her skills and go make a profound impact in whatever she chooses to do in her future."
