NEW ORLEANS -
The University of Alabama men’s and women's cross country teams have been named 2011 All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their exceptional performance in the classroom and on the course. The women’s team was also honored for having the highest team grade point average among cross country programs for the third year in a row. The team recently posted a 3.83 team GPA.
In 2010 the women’s team registered a cumulative GPA of 3.88 to earn the honor after achieving that feat the year before with a 3.86 GPA. In 2008, the squad had the second highest team GPA in the nation.
The All-Academic Teams include 205 women’s cross country programs from 30 conferences with nine programs from the Southeastern Conference making the list. It is the fourth straight year the Crimson Tide women’s team has been named an All-Academic Team.
The men’s team was one of seven SEC programs and 149 teams in the nation to earn All-Academic Team honors. The men’s program has garnered the prestigious designation in five of the last six seasons.
To be considered for the USTFCCCA All Academic Cross Country Team, a team must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at its respective NCAA regional championship.
