NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 23rd-ranked women's tennis team posted a 4-1 victory over Arizona on Sunday in the consolation match of the 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Currey Tennis Center. The win was the Crimson Tide's first of the season, bringing Alabama to 1-1 overall, while the Wildcats drop to 1-2.
"I was encouraged with our showing this weekend," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "The team fought hard and competed well. I thought we responded well after losing a nail-biter to Texas yesterday. We came out ready to play against a very good Arizona team early this morning."
Alabama captured the doubles point against Arizona to take the 1-0 lead heading into singles thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2. First to finish was the matchup on court two where junior Antonia Foehse and sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane cruised to an 8-1 victory over Wildcat senior Sarah Landsman and freshman Hailey Johnson. Senior Courtney McLane and junior Alexa Guarachi wrapped up the point for the Tide on court one with an 8-4 victory against senior Natasha Marks and sophomore Lacey Smyth.
"I'm particularly pleased with our doubles this weekend," added Mainz. "We played some convincing tennis at all three positions in both matches. We moved forward as a team this weekend."
In singles, 57th-ranked Marks would award Arizona its lone point of the match with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over sophomore Alex Clay to tie the team score at 1-1. Alabama would jump back in front with a 6-2, 6-2 win for 13th-ranked Macfarlane on court one over No. 107 Smyth. Foehse made it two in a row as she finished third, posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory against freshman Laura Oldham. The fourth, and final, point for the Tide came in dramatic fashion as senior Taylor Lindsey gutted out a 7-5, 7-5 victory over sophomore Susan Mc Rann on court four. Lindsey was down 5-3 in the second set before stringing together four straight games for the win.
"It was fitting for Taylor to clinch today," Mainz said. "She climbed back after being down in both sets. Her hard work and steadfast mentality paid dividends today."
Next up, Alabama will take on Rice on Saturday, February 18, at 1 p.m. CT. This will be the Tide's first home match of the season.
