TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 23rd-ranked women's tennis team will take part in its final tournament before kicking off the 2012 dual match season when it heads to Charlottesville, Va., for the UVA Invitational. Joining the Crimson Tide and host Cavaliers, who are ranked ninth, is Utah and Wake Forest.
"I think the team is really excited to start playing again," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "We haven't been to UVA in a while and are being exposed to teams we don't really see very often. The team looks good, and this is a great opportunity to get match play and gain some confidence before we head into our dual match season."
All eight Alabama players will take part in the tournament, including newcomer Yasmeen Ebada. Also in action representing the Tide will be seniors Taylor Lindsey and Courtney McLane, juniors Antonia Foehse and Alexa Guarachi, sophomores Alex Clay and Mary Anne Macfarlane and freshman Emily Zabor.
Alabama begins the 2012 season with three players ranked in singles as well as one team in doubles. Macfarlane is the highest-ranking in singles, coming in at No. 13. She is followed by Guarachi (No. 43) and McLane (No. 104). In doubles, Macfarlane and Guarachi make up the nation's 17th-ranked team.
Match play begins on Saturday, January 14, at 8 a.m. and will run through Monday afternoon. Both singles and doubles will be played.
