Men's Tennis Adds Seven Wins on Saturday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The men's tennis team had a successful showing on day two at both the Olympia Field Country Club Fighting Illini Invitational and the Duke Fab Four Invite, collected a combined seven singles victories. The Crimson Tide has now upped its win total to 11 over the last two days at both tournaments.
"The rainy conditions in North Carolina made for a long day indoors, but we were able to get several good wins in singles," Alabama head coach Billy Pate said. "I think we improved after the first day and look forward to finishing strong at both events tomorrow."
At the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational, Alabama got wins from sophomores Daniil Proskura and Carlos Taborga, along with freshman Stuart Kenyon. Proskura took down Cal's Ben McLachlan 6-3, 7-5, while Taborga netted a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Notre Dame's Wyatt McCoy. Kenyon notched a 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-3 win in his opening round match of the day over Kentucky's Ryuji Hirooka. In the third round, all three dropped matches with Proskura falling to Kentucky's Tom Jomby, 6-2, 6-1, Taborga falling to Notre Dame's Greg Andrews, 6-4, 6-4, and Kenyon to Notre Dame's Ryan Bandy, 7-5, 6-2.
The Tide added another four singles wins at the Duke Fab Four Invite thanks to the play of seniors Ricky Doverspike and Michael Thompson and junior Jarryd Botha. Doverspike was stopped up by South Carolina's Andrew Adams in his first match of the day but came back to take down NC State's Ivan Sanchez 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation draw. Thompson garnered wins in both his singles matches on Saturday outlasting Kentucky's Panav Jha 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(10) and followed that up with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over South Carolina's Chip Cox. Botha also notched one win on the day topping Kentucky's Grant Roberts 6-1, 6-3.
Match play resumes on Sunday at 8 a.m.
