BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Alabama freshman Laura Lee Smith (Jackson, Miss.) was named the Southeastern Conference Soccer Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday. The weekly accolade is the first of the season for the Crimson Tide and its first ever SEC weekly freshman honor.
Smith has gotten her collegiate career off to a fast start. The newcomer has scored three times in two matches to pace the Crimson Tide in scoring on the young season.
Smith jumped onto the scene in literally seconds in her first collegiate match, scoring the second fastest goal in school history, with a tally just 32 seconds into the Kennesaw State match. Smith then tallied two goals in a five-minute span in a 2-1 win over Samford on Sunday.
Her six points and three goals lead the SEC after the first weekend. The newcomer has helped Alabama get off to a quick start on the offensive end as the Tide leads the circuit with nine goals in two matches and its 27 points over that span is nearly double of any other team in the league.
Smith and the rest of the Crimson Tide will return home for two matches. Alabama will host the Memphis Tigers on Friday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m., and then play New Mexico on Sunday at Noon.
