STANFORD, Calif. - Freshman Mary Anne Macfarlane, ranked 37th in the nation, dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision to South Florida senior Irene Rehberger, ranked 35th, on Wednesday in the opening round of play in the NCAA Singles Championships.
"It was a hard-fought match both ways," Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. "I felt like Mary Anne had her chances, but I think she was a little inconsistent with dictating the offense. She is at her best when she is stepping up into the court and pushing people to the corners. She knew it would be affective, but it just was not there. I thought Irene did a good job of countering, and she was more consistent during the three sets. At this level, everyone is good, and it will probably only come down to a handful of points. Mary Anne has a lot to look forward to in her future and has done a tremendous job leading our team at No. 1 all season."
The Crimson Tide's top doubles team in junior Courtney McLane and sophomore Alexa Guarachi will hit the courts Thursday for their opening match in the NCAA Doubles Championship. McLane and Guarachi are slated to face Arizona State seniors Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein at the Taube Tennis Center not before 4 p.m. CT.
